Turnout for early voting slowed to a trickle this week with 237 voters casting their ballot in the runoff to fill the District 29 seat in the Texas House of Representatives left vacant by the Sept. 12 death of Glenda Dawson.
Voters will chose between two Republican candidates, Mike O’Day and Randy Weber.
O’Day is a longtime Matagorda County property owner who owns a water well company in Pearland that serves a number of the water utilities in Matagorda and Brazoria counties.
Weber served on the Pearland City Council for six years and has served as a Republican party precinct chairman and other party functions.
County Clerk Gail Denn said the runoff turnout falls below the December special election when 290 ballots were cast during the first four days of early voting.
“We had more on the first day of the runoff, but less the rest of the week,” Denn said.
Staff members in the county clerk’s office are foregoing the MLK holiday since polls will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday for the runoff.
Deputy clerks will be paired with sheriff’s deputies and deliver electronic voting machines to each polling site except for the service center.
“Since the service center is hosting the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Celebration, we’ll make arrangements to have it there when the poll opens at 7 a.m.” Denn said.
Election judges will also have access to the clerk’s office in the courthouse to pick up election supplies until noon, Denn said.
The courthouse will be closed for all other functions.
