O'Day takes Dist. 29 runoff
The Pearland Republican will replace deceased lawmaker Dawson

ANGLETON — Pearland Republican Mike O'Day won a runoff election Tuesday to replace deceased state Rep. Glenda Dawson.

In complete but unofficial returns, O'Day had 3,555 votes to beat another Pearland Republican, Randy Weber, who had 2,657 votes.

O'Day thanked his supporters, family, Dawson's family and local officials.

"I am honored to take Glenda's place," O'Day said. "I only hope I can do as well ...”

He said he plans to go to Austin today to see about committee assignments.

Dawson, 65, a Republican retired schoolteacher from Pear- land, died in September after serving two terms in the House. It was too late to take her name off the November general election ballot. She won with 60 percent of the vote.

O'Day, 56, retired owner of a family water-well-drilling company, and Weber, 53, operator of an air-conditioning company, were the top two vote getters in a four-way race in December for House District 29.

The Texas House went into session a week ago, but it may take another week for O'Day to be sworn in. Election returns will first have to be officially canvassed by Brazoria and Matagorda county commissioners’ court and by state officials.

Texas House District 29 includes all of Matagorda County and 32 voting precincts in northern and western Brazoria County, including Pearland, Alvin, Manvel, Rosharon, Damon and Old Ocean.
