After more than two months since the 2006 general election, Matagorda and Brazoria county voters have chosen Pearland businessman Mike O’Day to be their District 29 State Representative.

O’Day now will represent northern and western Brazoria County and all of Matagorda County in the Texas House of Representatives.

In Matagorda County, O’Day received 520 votes, or about 64 percent, compared to his opponent Randy Weber with 296 votes, or 36 percent.

In Brazoria County, 57 percent of voters supported O’Day.

County officials have 10 days to canvass runoff returns. The governor will canvass Jan. 30 and declare official results.

Although the cold weather may have kept voters from coming to the polls, Matagorda County election workers said the turnout was close to expectations.

The runoff winner should be seated by Feb. 1, roughly three weeks into the legislature’s 180-day regular session. The legislature convened Tuesday, Jan. 9.

In the Dec. 19 special election, O’Day captured 3,508 votes (48 percent), just 131 votes short of the required majority, according to the Texas Secretary of State Elections Division.

Randy Weber got 2,054 votes (28 percent) in the two-county district.
