Mustangs shut out Brazosport

The Friendswood Mustangs clinched the District 23-4A soccer title with a 2-0 victory over Brazosport on Tuesday.

Daniel Jackson and Evan Glenn scored for Friendswood, while Jonathan Allegra recorded the shutout in goal.

“It feels good after not being able to get it done last year,” said coach Stephen Peter. “I thought we had a good shot, but it is surprising to do it with three games left (in the regular season). Hopefully, we can finish strong and make a good run at the playoffs.”

Friendswood (19-2-1 overall, 11-0 district) travels to Angleton Friday at 7 p.m.

• Friendswood 2, Pearland 0 (girls): The Lady Mustangs shut out the Lady Oilers in their final tune-up before the postseason.

Sara Brezina and Betsey Hoeg each scored for Friendswood. Annalisa Hall and Katelyn Kasper recorded assists. Friendswood (14-3-1, 9-0) will host the Stafford-Santa Fe winner Tuesday at 6 p.m.

• Clear Creek 4, Brazoswood 0 (girls): Michele McCollough registered her 14th shutout of the season, as the Wildcats moved into a tie with Clear Lake for the district lead.

Scoring goals for Clear Creek were Stephanie Segura, Brittany Madrigal, Carolyn Kregel and Mariah Martinez

Creek (12-2-2, 7-1-1) travels to Pearland at 7 p.m. Friday.

• La Marque 3, Stafford 0 (girls): The Lady Coogs clinched third place in the District 23-4A North Zone with the win.

Rodneshia Bethany, Lizzy Dyer and Yoshonda Magee each scored goals.

Elena Jarimillo recorded the clean sheet in goal. Coach Daniel Foster said Trenise Player was the MVP of the game for the way she, “battled hard in the middle of the field.”

La Marque (2-6 district) will play Dickinson in the first round of the District 23-4A tournament next week.

• Dickinson 4, Santa Fe 0 (girls): Stephanie Ginn recorded the shutout in goal to help the Lady Gators clinch second place in the District 23-4A South Zone.

Robin Bradley, Katie Mitchiner, Neddy Garcia and Paige Hannah each scored goals for the Lady Gators. Valerie Alexander added two assists.

Dickinson (9-6-1, 5-3) will play La Marque in the first round of the District 23-4A tournament next week.

Santa Fe finishes the regular season 2-10-2 (0-6-2 district).

Baseball

• Ball High 6, Kinkaid 4: The Tors scored three runs in the final three innings to get the win.

Chad Rogers won his third game of the season, giving up five hits and striking out eight.

Paul Montalbano and Matt Williams each went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Mike Littleton drove in the winning run, and also made a game-saving play in the seventh inning. With a runner on third base, Littleton made an over-the-shoulder catch at second base to end the game.

Ball High (8-4) begins play at the Brazosport tournament on Thursday.

• Santa Fe 9, Liberty 0: Eric Butler struck out eight batters to get the win for the Indians.

Stephen Wostal and Corey Lashway each drove in two runs, while Taylor Terrasas was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Santa Fe (7-6) plays in the Brazosport tournament beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday against Macarthur.

Softball

• O’Connell 11, Lutheran South 1, five innings: Molly Mlcak drove in four runs for the Lady Bucs.

Devin Borsellino won her fifth game, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out five.

Melanie Helms went 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Kat Dispensa went 2-for-3 with three runs. Borsellino, Megan O’Malley, Abbey Laclade, Kaitlyn King, Cristen Selby and Chrisy Armstrong each added hits.

O’Connell (5-2) hosts its first district game against Mt. Carmel Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
