Nancy Holland's 11 News report

A number of cities in the Houston-area have put smoking bans into place but there is one push that has caught extra attention in Pearland.

It involves a bunch of minors that are getting major support to snuff out smoking.

It started in science class where they have been learning about the atmosphere, but it was the air around them that set them in motion.

A sixth grade science class in Pearland is pushing city hall to pass a smoking ban.

"We decided we needed to try and get a smoking ban,” one of the students said.

So the sixth graders at Sablatura Middle School decided to take on Pearland City Hall.

"Our first idea was to get picket signs and go down there and protest,” said another sixth grader.

But somebody said that wasn't such a great idea.

Teacher David Bean told them other cities like Houston used to have smoking in restaurants. Now many of them don't.

On Monday, the kids will take their case to city hall

City council will have two choices, it could decide whether to pass an ordinance or it could decide whether to put the issue before voters.

Just in case, the class has already drafted an ordinance.

Of course, one of the lessons of politics is that sometimes it doesn't work.

"I think we're going to keep on trying until it's passed,” declared one confident student.

But what they already know is that it isn't just adults who can change the world. .
