O’Connell softball ends district undefeated

HOUSTON — The O’Connell High School softball team completed its third-straight undefeated district season Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Cypress Christian and Houston St. Thomas.

The Lady Bucs beat Cypress Christian, 14-0, in five innings and beat St. Thomas, 16-0, in three innings. They did not allow a hit in either game.

Melanie Helms (3-0) struck out 14 and walked one in the first game, while Devin Borsellino and Cameron Chide combined for six strikeouts and one walk in the second game.

Christy Armstrong and Kat Dispensa had five hits apiece. Armstrong added seven RBIs and two runs, while Dispensa scored four runs. Helms and Borsellino each had two RBIs and five runs scored. Anna Hogan had three hits, three RBIs and four runs scored.

The Lady Bucs (19-3, 8-0 district) will host a first-round district tournament game Thursday.

Friendswood 11, La Marque 3: Friendswood trailed 3-1 through two innings then scored nine runs in the third. The Lady Mustangs (11-15-1, 7-2 District 23-4A) made six errors. Senior shortstop Hailey Wiginton had two singles and two RBIs and scored one run. Kirstie Curry had three hits and two RBIs, and Nikki Glines had one RBI and scored two runs. Britney Salyer had a two-run single. Chelsea Alvarado and Giana Robinson had one RBI apiece for La Marque (0-8 district). Brandi Johnson had two hits and scored a run, while Mikiesha Hinton had two hits.

Ball High 6, Clear Lake 0: Visiting Ball High (10-14-1, 1-8 District 24-5A) picked up its first district victory thanks to 13 hits and top-notch defense. Melissa Delbosque (9-13-1) struck out four and gave up five hits to earn the win. Samantha Angel was 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Kylie Arms was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Danny Barragan had three hits. “The girls came out aggressive and hit the ball well,” Ball High coach Amanda Spencer said. “Clear Lake hit the ball well. We made some exceptional defensive plays.”

BASEBALL

Pearland 7, Clear Creek 2: Pearland (18-6, 5-2 District 24-5A) scored four runs in the second inning and led 7-0 when Clear Creek’s Jared Cosart hit a two-run single in the sixth. Clear Creek is 10-11 (3-4 district).

Texas City 12, Waltrip 2 (5 inn.): Chase Campbell got the victory as Texas City improved to 13-9. Michael Ray had two hits and four RBIs, Trey Strickland had three RBIs and Jonathan Campbell had two hits. Texas City, which made no errors, continues district play at Santa Fe Monday night.
