Pearland powers past West Brook

Published May 10, 2007

PEARLAND — Lightning flickered far beyond the outfield fence Thursday but stayed far enough away that there was no weather delay in the West Brook-Pearland baseball playoff game Thursday.

The flashes drew several “oos” and “ahs” in a game that Pearland held on to win 10-9.

Pearland had 16 hits, including two home runs and four doubles. Matt Murphy had the winning hit, a one-out line drive to right field in the bottom of the seventh.

“They hit the ball well today,” said West Brook coach Jacob Walton, whose team will host the second game of a best-of-three Class 5A series against Pearland at 4 p.m. today.

A third game, if needed, is 6 p.m. Saturday at Barbers Hill.

Pearland committed two errors in a three-run seventh for West Brook. Both errors were wild throws that prevented Pearland from completing double plays.

The first error allowed West Brook to load the bases with none out. An infield single sent home one run, and two more runs scored on the other error.

The inning ended with a double play on a fly ball to center field. A runner at second base ran when the ball was hit and never returned after it was caught.

Two one-out singles for Pearland put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the inning. A walk loaded the bases.

Matt Murphy said Pearland had won several games this season with a hit in its last at-bat.

“It seems like we always end up bouncing back,” he said.

The Bruins closed an early 7-2 deficit to 7-6 with a run in the third and three more in the fourth. Pearland held a 9-6 lead after scoring a run in the fourth and another in the fifth.

Joshua Fisher doubled in West Brook’s run in the third. The Bruins scored in the fourth with a one-RBI single to right field by Tim Ferguson and a two-RBI single up the middle by Bobby Armstrong.

David Murphy’s two-run shot over the fence in left field topped West Brook’s record of 32 home runs in 2004.

West Brook’s first six runs were scored on two-out hits.
