Pearland gets by Alvin

Published May 11, 2007

SANTA FE — Alvin and Pearland might have split their District 24-5A games this season, but the two teams weren’t as evenly matched Thursday night in the first game of their Class 5A, Region III quarterfinal series.

Pearland hurler Rhiannon Kliesing made sure of that as she hurled a one-hitter to lead the Lady Oilers to a 4-0 victory over the Lady ’Jackets.

Holding a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series, the Lady Oilers can go for the sweep at 6 p.m. today in Game 2 at Santa Fe High School. Game 3, if necessary, would be played immediately following.

Kliesing overpowered Alvin hitters, striking out nine on the evening. Tiffany Galletti was the only Lady ’Jacket to get on base against the Pearland senior. She did so with an infield hit in the bottom of the fifth.

While Kliesing was keeping Alvin bats quiet, Pearland banged out eight hits against Alvin starter Tiffany Denham and reliever Amber Anderson.

Pearland scored the only run it would need in the top of the third. With Lindsey Langner at third and Kelsea Orsak at second, Alvin catcher Meghan Gomez couldn’t handle a Denham pitch that went to the backstop. It allowed Langner to come home with the first run of the game.

The Lady Oilers added to their lead in the fifth. Megan Coronado led off the inning with a triple. With one out, she scored on an error on a ball hit by Orsak.

After Orsak stole second, Kliesing followed with a sharp single to center field to bring her home and give Pearland a 3-0 lead.

It was one of three hits Kliesing had in the contest, which included a double and a triple.

Kliesing doubled with two out in the seventh. That was followed by a single to center by Tiffany Stritz, which scored courtesy runner Jensen Tydelski, who was running for Kliesing, from second.
