Five of the seven District 24-5A baseball squads had an opportunity to get into the postseason until late in the year. That talent level across the board is reflected in area players who received all-district honors as decided upon by team coaches.
At the regular season’s end, three District 24-5A squads were tied for the top spot — Alvin (19-12, 8-4), Clear Lake (27-6, 8-4) and Pearland (26-8, 8-4) — with Clear Brook (16-14, 7-5) claiming the fourth position. A coin flip determined the order of finish for the top three, as the Yellow-jackets represented the district as the No. 1 seed.
A year removed from reaching three rounds deep into the playoffs, Brazoswood never could get into gear this season. The Bucs (14-16, 3-9) wound up tied with Galveston Ball (13-13, 3-9) for last place in district.
“We had higher expectations, but it seems like every game we had one bad inning, and it was too much for us to recover from,” Brazoswood coach Bobby Williams said. “We wound up losing some of those games by a run or two and never really got blown out too much this year.”
Co-most valuable players for the district were Pearland’s Giovanni Angel and Clear Lake’s Richard Porfirio. The newcomer of the year was Kevin Miller of Pearland and the coach of the year was Clear Lake’s Sean Wood.
Alvin lost in the first round of the playoffs to Fort Bend Dulles, while the Oilers defeated Fort Bend Clements and Beaumont West Brook, before losing to Fort Bend Elkins in the region quarterfinals.
First-team, all-district pitchers were Alvin sophomore Aaron Stewart, Pearland senior David Blount, Clear Lake’s Michael McCalib and Ball’s Chad Rogers. The first-team first baseman was Clear Brook’s Jake Ferrer, Pearland second baseman Nick Long, Clear Brook shortstop Matt Juenge, Alvin third baseman Daniel Land, Clear Lake designated hitter Tyler Gros and Clear Creek utility player Jared Cosart.
First-team selections in the outfield were Brazoswood’s Epo Alborado, Ball’s Paul Montalbano, Clear Lake’s Eric Givens, Creek’s Jeremy Brooks and Brook’s K.C. Carroll.
Second-team players were Brazoswood’s Harrison Falkney; Alvin’s Zach Dietrich, Ryan Kelso and Michael Guerra; Pearland’s Machon Trimm, Josh Ezernack, Matt Murphy and Marcus Klibert; Clear Lake’s Chad Phelps; Clear Creek’s Shawn Blackwell; Clear Brook’s Tyler Harris, Matt Sheppard and Ryan Chidester.
Honorable mentions are Brazoswood’s Tyler Camp, Nick Bacica and Ben Coram; and Alvin’s Moe Guisto.
“This year we had more sophomores on the varsity than any other year I’ve been here,” Williams said. “They got some good experience this season and was good preparation for next year.”
